Not long before his death, I went with a radio producer to ask him to record a very beautiful paragraph from his Second Innings, to do with the transience of existence. He duly recorded it, and then said, 'That's pretty good, you know. Couldn't write it now.' He was wrong, and anyone who doubts that he retained his mastery to the end should read, in Full Score, his essay about one of his mistresses, called 'Milady'. He was eighty when he wrote it. As they say in the classics, I should live so long.
