Pope Charles

Sir: Charles Moore (Another voice, 10 July) attacks the condom in the name of God via the Vatican. Have the sexual habits of a single Spectator-reading couple been altered by his attack? If so, please indicate. God, one gathers, so says the Moore-Paul VI tradition, is ineffable, moving mysteri- ously. If so, how can Charles Moore dare to know divine thinking? 'If God does [so] declare what marriage is,' he asks, 'how can He possibly countenance contraception?' God's decrees in Christian teaching are not bound by any partisan's conditional logic. In Christian historiography, the last time He/he gave any signs of a decree on human affairs was by means of a son a little under 2,000 years ago. Clearly, He/he didn't use a condom. I write as a Jewish atheist, who thinks that the writer's suppositions are nonsense anyway.
