Page v Waugh

Sir: Parents, as trustees, have certainly been enriched by ,the thalidomide settlement which, in many cases, has raised their family incomes to the level of what Mr Healey defines as `extreme wealth'. In at least one case of which I have read a parent has been allowed to dispose the principal on home improvements.

Mr Page writes: `To anyone less thick than Waugh it would be obvious that the Sunday Times had to pay out a very great deal [sic) of its own money to run the thalidomide campaign'.

I never doubted that this was the case. I merely question whether it makes Mr Evans more of a Samaritan that he was prepared to spend his employer's money in this way. Auberon Waugh Combe Florey, Taunton, Somerset
