T. E. UTLEY MEMORIAL PRIZE

ON THE first anniversary of the death of T. E. Utley, the great political writer whose writing illuminated the Daily Telegraph and the Times — and many other journals — over a span of more than 40 years, the first of the annual awards given in his memory is announced. The £5,000 prize goes to 25-year-old Andrew Sullivan of the New Republic (USA) whose work also appears in feature articles in the Daily Telegraph in this country.

The judges of the award, who were asked to choose the most promising political writer of the year, were John Biffen MP, Caroline Moore and John O'Sullivan.

Andrew Sullivan will later in the year deliver an address on Conservatism and Citizenship, under the terms of the Award.

The T. E. Utley Memorial Fund which enjoys the patronage of the Prime Minister, is the beneficiary of the donations of over 200 of his friends and admirers: the principal contributors being Conrad Black and Rupert Mur- doch. The founding contributors who gave over £1,000 each include: Corpus Christi College Cambridge, Lord Deedes, Harland and Wolff, Lord Hart- well, Mrs Gordon Heath, Phillips Elec- tronics and Tiphook.
