Polish opinion

Sir: I am very grateful to you for sending me The Spectator.

I work as a journalist in the Polish press. The knowledge of various political and ideological trends in the West, as well as of various opinions expressed in the circum- stances of freedom of speech, is extremely useful in my professional work. It is helpful even in the case of opinions which will not be published in a censored publication.

Every issue of The Spectator, after I have read it, goes to a number of other readers — among them too the editors of the Polish independent press (published out- side the reach of censorship).

The recent years have brought a signifi- cant shift in Polish public opinion. The evident fiasco of Marxist ideology results in a growing popularity of rightist and con- servative trends. The enthusiasm of the Poles for Mrs Thatcher and Mr George Bush is the best proof of the opinion. Therefore, I think that it is extremely important that the publications represent- ing the contemporary conservative thought in the West should reach Poland.
