COMPETITION

Bardograms

Jaspistos

In Competition No. 1579 you were asked for anagrams of single lines from Shakespeare's plays (modern spelling), ex- tra points to be awarded for relevance of anagram to play.

Making up anagrams may be fun, but checking them is hell. But it's done and it's my birthday (picture me sitting under my apple tree eating smoked salmon, raspber- ries and roquefort and drinking gewiirztra- miner (Hugel). Unlike Richard III, I am in the giving vein today, so as many of you as possible get a prize: £4 each to everyone printed below. When two anagrams of the same quotation were offered, I chose the better, even if they were both good. Relevance paid off, but I have allowed some purely surrealist entries on the grounds of amusement. I've even allowed myself a prizewinner's place without the money. Benevolence rules, OK? The bonus bottle of Lamberhurst 1986 Seyval Blanc Dry English Wine, presented by Stephen Skelton of Lamberhurst Vineyards, goes to Michael Lee for the brace of anagrams which appealed to me most.

And you arc stayed for. There, my blessing with thee! (Hamlet) 'Messy,' sighed Horatio. 'We, 'er, bury any left at the end.'

Against my very heart; poor souls, they perish'd (Tempest) Say, hasn't mighty Prospero retired, soul-heavy?

(Michael Lee)

This day is called the feast of Crispian (Henry V) A fat, idle French display — so chastise it

(Bob Ingham) 0! my offence is rank, it smells to heaven (Hamlet) Riot of seven sins to make me fancy hell!

(Michael Pickering) I am a man more sinned against than sinning (Lear) None admits a man's a man, singing in the rain (James Tebbutt)

Empties itself as doth an inland brook (Mer- chant of Venice)

On the Rialto men talk of bids and spies (Ba Miller) 0, that I were a glove upon that hand (Romeo and Juliet) What a death! Nothing to a pure love (0. Smith) Uncle, this is a Montague, our foe (Romeo and Juliet) A loutish, curious man e.g. no feet (N. E. Soret) The quality of mercy is not strained (Merchant of Venice)
