Women's whims

From Mr Andrew Thorpe Sir: Melanie Phillips has written a mature, forthright and courageous article (The rape of justice', 10 June).

It appears that men are being displaced to such an extent that they do not even under- stand their role in society any more. It seems that a hard-working man, who has sacrificed his well-being and health for the good of his family, is only tolerated in a marriage at the whim of his wife. If she should find another man, she can exercise her right to divorce- on-demand and claim approximately two- thirds of the family's assets.

It is no wonder, then, that divorce is fast becoming the privilege of womankind. With over 72 per cent of divorces being initiated by women, it strikes me that there must be many men trapped in unhappy marriages, unable to move lest they lose their kids, their home, two-thirds of their assets and, very often, their dignity and self-respect.
