We regret to record the news of the serious illness

of the Emperor of Japan, which is reported in a telegram to Friday's papers. The illness, we are told, has been diagnosed as inflammation of the lungs, and the Emperor is in a high fever. It is difficult to say what effect the illness will have upon the relations of America and Japan, but we note with satisfaction that President Wilson has at once sent a message of regret at the Mikado's illness, couched in extremely sympathetic, language.
