The constituency of Reading has returned Mr. Pigott by a

large majority after a smart contest. Southwark is embarrassed with candidates. Mr. Fawcett seems to have a good chance, but at a meeting where Mr. Fawcett was preferred to Mr. Scovell, Mr. Layard was preferred to Mr. Fawcett. It matters a great deal to Southwark, no doubt, who succeeds Sir Charles Napier, but it does not matter much to anybody else. If, indeed, the electors could find another Molesworth, then his election would be a fact of imperial interest. But whether it be Scovell, or Layard, or Fawcett, unfortunately is of no importance to the empire in general.
