It is stated on the evidence of the missionaries who

have quitted Moukden, that the city has been abandoned by its inhabitants, only the soldiers remaining, and that "the treasure" has been removed. That treasure then existed, as the Japanese originally said,—a very curious fact, though of course its amount remains undecided. It should, however, he a sum of some magnitude, for the story indicates a con- tinuous saving, and continuous saving by an Emperor of China could hardly be in pennies.
