No. 476: Sextet

COMPETITION

Competitors are invited to compose a six-line poem, or stanza of a poem, on any one of the subjects given below, using three of the follow- ing four pairs of words as end-rhymes. Although not in their original order, the rhymes are taken from a well-known poem (and in the case of long poems, from one stanza). The rhyme- scheme is optional.

The rhymes: roam, home; gentleness, less; day, away; aware, air.

The subjects: devaluation; Lord Chalfont; Christmas shopping; a new brand of soap powder.

In addition to prizes of five guineas for the best contribution and three guineas each for the runners-up, a special prize of one guinea will be awarded to the first entry opened which cor- rectly identifies the poem from which the rhymes were chosen. Entries, marked 'Competi- tion,' must be in by 4 December.
