Selected Letters of Gustav Mahler

Edited by KNUD MARTNER Alma Mahler, the composer's widow edited and published some 400 of his lettersin their original German in 1924. This highly important collection now appears in English for the first time, finely translated by Eithne Wilkins and Ernst Kaiser.

The letters span Mahler's life from his seventeenth year to his death in 1911. Fascinating in themselves, the letters offer vivid insights into Mahler's life and times, his personality, his conducting and, most revealing of all, into his music and its composition. To the contents of the first edition are now added twenty-three letters by Mahler and thirteen written to him by his parents and sisters. The present edition restores passages omitted by Alma Mahler and has been annotated by Knud Martner in the light of the most recent research.
