Undoctored

Sir: In Another voice (3 November), AO- eron Waugh highlighted my plight, and what must be the plight of numerous other students, who have had their doctoral theses rejected for no good reason. Since 1864, students have been appealing to the Visitors of their universities for justice; few have succeeded. This may partly be due to the strength of the opposition: at My hearing, I represented myself. The uni- versity was represented by two barristers, one solicitor, the Academic Registrar and one other. La Fontaine satirised such all inequality in one of his fables, when he wrote, La raison du plus fort est toujours la meilleure. Sadly, such a situation is likelY to prevail, unless student appeals are heard more informally by an independent Panel of academic experts, in full and with a fair exchange of information.
