Pip Todd Warmoth

Timeless paintings that evoke the sacred atmosphere of India by Elizabeth Kenny Pip Todd Warmoth was born in Lincolnshire into an artistic family. His father is a painter and his mother a concert pianist. Since graduating from the Royal Academy Schools in 1988, Warmoth has derived much of his inspiration for his work from his extensive travels, often to exotic destinations including South America, Tibet, Egypt, Mongolia and most recently revisiting India. Armed with a complete portable studio, he ventures off the beaten track, absorbing local cultures, making sketches and shooting rolls of film. Later, back in his Brixton studio, using a combination of his memory bank and his imagination, he transfers his thoughts and his ideas on to board. Warmoth paints in oils and uses the old fashioned technique of applying layers of colour to create a soft harmonious light. Glazing is an important part of his technique and can create a beautiful translucent effect on colours. His atmospheric scenes poignantly convey the moods and emotions of ordinary people.

To quote one of Todd Warmoth's avid collector's, David Tang, "It's so refreshing nowadays to find good figurative and atmospheric paintings, which also have verisimilitude: a quality which now seems to be rather scarce given that great purdah of what passes as Modern Arr. So it is a joy to return to an old-fashioned approach to painting: unfussed, technically accomplished and beautiful to look at — all that Pip does with his paintings. Bravo!"

This collection depicts the traditions and rich colour of India, the subject varies from the momentous fair of Kumh-mela to the cattle and camel Fairs in Rajastan and the banks of the Ganges. India has held over the years a special magic for Todd Warmoch, there is a profound spiritual connection. As the locations of his paintings change, the moods and colours follow.

The Honorable Chris Patten is amongst his staunch collectors, he eloquently describes Todd Warmoth's work, "There is a vitality about his style, a wit, a marvellously dreamy sense of light and an increasing assurance in painting the faces of the world, whether they are from the banks of India's holy Ganges to the mountain plateau's of South America."
