Frozen Cafe

From Mr James Gladstone Sir: Conservatives Against a Federal Europe (Cafe) has not been suspended by the leadership of the Conservative party (Letters, 10 November).

lain Duncan Smith is a vice-president of Cafe and has appointed 16 Cafe vice-presidents to his front bench. At last the Conservative party is unconditionally against a federal Europe. Confident of that, my committee decided that Cafe could stop actively campaigning — a decision taken without outside pressure from any source whatsoever, and most certainly not from Central Office in whose side we have been a thorn for the past five years.

Although inactive, Cafe still exists. We are in the freezer, not the mortuary.

James Gladstone

Chairman, Conservatives Against a Federal Europe. Newbury, Berkshire
