Deep Waters

From Mr Rory Knight Bruce Sir: Charles Spencer should not be allowed to get away with serving up the old fish that Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett was a psychedelic genius and Roger Waters's contribution was 'joyless slabs of the doomily portentous' (Arts, 17 November). How easy for a grand theatre critic to dismiss the lyrical achievements of a man without whom Pink Floyd would have remained a silly footnote in Spencer's suburban childhood.

It would not be overstating the bleak writing of Waters to compare him to Strindberg or Ibsen. His remark, when David Gilmour took back the name of the band against his legal wishes — they took my child and sold her into prostitution' — is an example of the solitary observations which have sold him millions of records.
