Canadians were horrified by the murder of Mr Pierre Laporte, Minister of Labour in the Quebec provincial government, and one of the two people kidnapped by cells of the Quebec Liberation Front. His body was discovered in the boot of the car in which he had been abducted from his home eight days earlier. Mr Trudeau. the Canadian Prime Minister, described the death of Mr Laporte as a 'dastardly assassination by a band of murderers' The other kidnap victim, British diplomat Mr James Cross, who is held by a different cell of the separa- tist movement. was allowed to send a let- ter to his wife saying that he was alive and well and being well treated.

At hortm British Petroleum made a major oil discovery in the North Sea 110 miles east of Aberdeen. Preliminary esti- mates indicated that it might supply 3 per cent of the country's oil consumption. The local government strike continued and with untreated sewage in the Thames becoming a health hazard.

The South African arms issue came into the headlines once more with an alleged row between, the Prime Minister and President Kaunda of Zambia at a No. 10 dinner party. Mr Heath and Sir Alec Douglas-Home flew to New York for the General Assembly of the United Nations, Nijinsky the wonder horse lost to Lorenzaccio in the Newmarket Champion Stakes. And with high hopes, the British Test team flew to Australia.
