The First Book of Arithmetic, for the Use of Schools,

is pub- lished under the direction of the Commissioners of National Edu- cation for Ireland. It proceeds to the extraction of the cube root and duodecimal multiplication; to which are added some rules for mental arithmetic, and the answers to the questions in the body of the book. Like Dr. REID'S Chemistry, the object of the work is to teach the practice rather than the theory, which is to be ex- pounded in another volume. The examples in the present are pro- gressive, and neatly and compactly exhibited. Were it not that children cannot comprehend the principle without working it. out for themselves by practice, howsoever stated, it might be objected that the rules are too rigorously defined to be readily intelligible to the young. Judging from appearances, we should suppose the book is very cheap.
