SIR,—Mr. Nicolson suggests that the indignation aroused by the delayed

trial of the German Generals is proof of a charming natural characteristic of our race that makes us incapable of harbouring resentment for past injuries. I suggest that it is entirely due to an aroused sense of the injustice, even of the cruelty, in keeping three old men in prison under harsh conditions for over three years without trial. Even a Nazi General is not " guilty " till he has been proved so by fair trial.—! am, Sir, yours
