Winchester Cathedral Close. By John Vaughan. (Sir Isaac Pitman and

Sons. Is. not.)—Canon Vaughan has chosen a delightful subject, and has made a charming book out of the historical and literary associations of Winchester. He describes the monastic life of the old Roman Catholio days with great knowledge and sympathy. Perhaps he is even better inspired in his account of " the cradle of our English prose "—for it was at Winchester that King Alfred made what Dean Kitchin calls " the first and greatest history book of the English people."
