Though we have been ourselves opposed to evacuation owing to

our belief that it could not be accomplished without great loss of life, we. not merely acquiesce in but welcome the retirement. No doubt to the onlooker the position of the troops who are to remain in occupation of the toe of the peninsula—i.e., at Cape Hellos--seems one of considerable anxiety. We must, however, assume that there was good cause for leaving them there, and that the Government are confident that the withdrawal from Anzac and Silvia has not rendered the position at Cape Belles untenable.
