The Parliamentary foundation of Mr. Asquith's speech was a demand

for another million men. In the course of it he announced that in the various fields of war we had a fighting force of over a million and a quarter men. Our aim, ho declared, must be to get every eligible man consistent with carrying on the essential work of the country. There followed what was perhaps the most important thing in the speech, the declaration that there was not one of the Allies who was not as determined as we are to win the war and to have nothing whatever to do with a separate peace.
