Emerging men

From Professor H. S. Ferns

Sir: In a letter published in The Spectator on December 4 I called attention to an instance of the corruption of appointment procedures in the universities through the publication of information about candidates and the names of persons concerned in their appointment. The man described as ' emerging' as a professor has informed me through his solicitor that the newspaper report about this matter was erroneous and that he had been appointed already when reported as only 'emerging.' If this is so, the conclusions come to by me and by others about the purpose of this news ' were naturally erroneous. I am sorry about this. It seems strange that no steps were taken by this man to deprecate and deny a newspaper report so prejudicial to himself and to universities generally. H. S.
