MR. WILSON MEANWHILE had gone to Moscow, the first visit

there by a British Prime Minister for seven years. Though it was agreed on both sides there was little chance of progress, he was received with some cordiality and paid his customary visit to the Bolshoi Ballet. Old names returned to the news : Mr. Selwyn Lloyd came back from Rhodesia convinced, he said, that talks with Mr. Smith should begin as soon as possible; General de Gaulle gave another press conference and was rude ahout NATO; Vice-President Humphrey made another tour of Southern Asia; Senator Robert Kennedy recommended talks with the Viet- cong and President Sukarno seemed finally to have reinstated himself in Indonesia after last year's abortive coup. Oil was reported flowing into Rhodesia : after some days of scepticism sources in London agreed that it was certainly more than a trickle and Mr. Wilson summoned the South African Ambassador.
