Betting at NatWest

YOU would have thought, said the general manager of the National Westminster Bank, that when we announce a profit of more than £1,400 million and break every record, people would be quite pleased. He has my sympathy. Good news was no news, and all the excitement was in the Chairmanship Stakes and the DTI ste- wards' inquiry into County NatWest. For the big race, my bets are now on a non-banker, a non-member of the board, a public figure, one with legal connections, and a tenner on the nose of Lord (Robert) Alexander of Weedon, QC. As for the inquiry, the only safe bet is that it will overshadow all concerned for far too long, but I have an uneasy feeling that the stewards, conscious of their own in-and- out record, would not mind making an example.
