.4 Bid for E'mpire. By Major Arthur Griffiths: (Digby, Long,

and Co. 6s.)—This is a book of adventures in Egypt and the Soudan at the time of the last campaign. The local colour is laid on with an unstinting hand, and we have scenes in fashionable Cairo society, interviews with veiled Egyptian ladies, secret meetings, and Dervish rites, besides an exciting voyage up the Nile on a dababiyeh. The hero is, of course, an officer in the Egyptian Army, who thoroughly deserves the good luck he gets, and the heroine is an American girl whose father is an old gentleman

with dollars and enthusiastic ideas on the subject of Egypt for the Egyptians, which let him in for most unpleasant consequences.
