Down the Tube

Sir: I suspect Mr Henry Kelly does not trav- el by Tube ('Why Blair beggars belief, 11 January). Every day, I have to run the gauntlet down Holloway Road, past tramps who lie unconscious on benches with urine- stained trousers around their ankles and wander out into the road causing accidents. They vomit over the pavements and always shuffle up to you while you are buying your ticket, though totally incapable of speech.

One is pestered during the journey by people who stink so offensively they have a carriage to themselves, and if you don't hand over money they get abusive. Funnily enough, I count myself a socialist and pay my taxes more or less willingly in the expec- tation that the Government will care for people like this, but I make one simple challenge to Mr Kelly —you try it.
