The Bishop of Vizen, a leading member of the Portuguese

Chamber of Deputies, has been appointed Minister of the Interior, the only instance, if we recollect aright, in this century, of a high ecclesiastic becoming, out of Spain, a Minister of State. The creeds have been too jealous of each other, but in a country of one doctrine like Portugal we see little good and much harm in prohibiting the clergy from contact with civil life. Dr. Tait would make a capital Home Secretary, and acquire quite novel ideas about the Irish Church.
