MR. ZANGWILL'S PLAY " WE MODERNS [To the Editor of

the SPECTATOR.] Sin,—Your critic, " R.J.," reviewing my comedy We Moderns at the. New Theatre, says that he cannot find the parents 1 more charming morally than their children. But how does he khow that I do ? Surely the very essence of comedy is human imperfection I He also entirely omits Dolly, the society idol, from my protraiture of feminine modernity. It is • she in whose mouth are put the modern quotations from the imaginary authoress of Glad Cucumbers. I agree with your critic's admiration of Dora Gregory as this authoress : but surely the fact that she has written this sort of stuff does bring the play up to date ? As a matter of fact I myself possess a recent book, the nonsense of which reduces Glad' Cucumbers to comparative sense.

Finally, I should like to point out that through the abnor- mally late marriage of the parents they and their children are abnormally apart.—I am, Sir, &c.,

ISRAFT. ZANGWILL.
