Innocents

Sir: Could you explain Mr Horovitz's reference (Letters, 11 July) to the inno- cents for whom Mrs Thatcher failed to intercede in the Falklands?

As the mother of a serving soldier I am even less anxious than Mr Horovitz that the army should be involved in fighting. I am, however, forced to accept that the nature of the job demands that they be prepared to fight and to die should it be required of them.

Anyone who joined up in the contrary impression is surely 'innocent' only in the old Scottish sense — half-witted in the unkinder English parlance.
