Many pits were opened on Monday, In readiness for the

resumption of work, but only in the Cannock Chase district of Staffordshire did miners return in large numbers. It was apparent in the Midlands and in East Lothian and elsewhere that many miners would be delighted to go back to work, but they were kept away by angry mobs, whose organizers were_ doubtless well paid for their trouble. At Cannock _Chase the thousands of men who returned to the pits were properly pro- tected by mounted police. It. may be hoped that the authorities elsewhere will afford similar protection to those miners who wish to exercise their legal " right to work"
