Sir: Miaow. A saucer of milk for Richard Ingrams. He

is obviously jealous over Huw Wheldon's deft and interesting covering of the vast treasures of our Royal Heritage. He is nasty, too, over objets d'art. 'If we have lost all the high price junk in Mentmore, there is plenty more where that came from in Buckingham Palace.' He throws into the dustbin the accumulations of unsurpassable examples of human skill and artistic perfection. It is only to be expected in this slap-happy, any-port-in-a-storm age, that patient craftsmanship and fine art mastery should be so belittled.

Your recent leading articles, sir, do much to restore a proper balance, and bring the Spectator into closer contact with us ordinary unsuperior folk, who admire beautiful things and are glad to see that they are being properly cared for, and who love Her Majesty, God bless her. Shucks to Mr Richard Ingrams, say I.
