Colespeak

Sir: A letter (11 June) from John Cole's on- ly known fan, and just when we were hop- ing the BBC had begun to get the message — how very unfortunate!

Richard Ingrams is of course absolutely right. The vowel sounds are nothing less than weird, and in the retrospective task of sorting out and recovering from one sentence, one loses the next entirely. 'Scarcely intelligible' is no overstatement.

I, at least, will not get used to Colespeak

— I have long since learned to switch off, or switch over, the moment it begins. God bless News at Ten!
