LETTERS Penal colonies

Sir: With reference to the article, 'Bring back Botany Bay' (14 May), could I suggest to Mr Barker that England finds her own space for penal settlements?

While I appreciate his efforts to allow 'the people to come back' to the High- lands, and I assume the Scots would he dealt with in a more humane manner than the Aborigines of 200 years ago, I feel sure there are plenty of English landowners who could have their land compulsorily purchased for the project.

Has Mr Barker considered all the avail- able options? What about repopulating the inner cities with offenders and their fami- lies, or perhaps some London councils would be happy to adapt their larger parks for this purpose. Indeed has Mr Barker a reasonably large back garden. . . ? Monica Co!ledge
