Sheridan's victory overEarly near Charlottesville is confirmed, but 'Charlottesville had not apparently fallen into his hands. 'General Sherman had not yet come to the surface, though there were rumours that he was at Fayetteville, on Cape -Fear River, and other rumours that he had been checked and was retiring towards Charleston. The Federal force at Newbern had advanced nearly to Kingston.
