REFUGEES - FROM AUSTRIA [To the Editor of THE SPECTATOR.] Sir,—When

we claim to be a "Christian nation" we nuY have our tongues in our cheeks, but of the many unchristian things that we do as a nation, surely one of the worst is to refuse refuge to those who are fleeing from the terror in Austria. We are sending back to Austria men and women who rflaN be returning to death and torture. • In the past our nation il stock, our trade, our culture, have been permanently enriched by refugees from the Continent. Many will need jobs here, and many of us still lack them, but some of those who flee from the Nazis may before long employ Englishmen. Moreover we are perhaps the richest nation on earth, and even 100,000 more people on the dole would not ruin us ; we can afford to spend £350,000,000 a year on the next war,' and nearly as' much on the last one. Is it quite out-of-date to be Good Samaritans ?—Yours truly, M. E. LAMPARD. 2 Lexdon Road, Colchester, Essex.
