THE MARATHON TOMB

[To the Editor of THE SPECTATOR.] Sta,—Some years ago I was standing by Hyde Park railings, watching the arrival of a rally at the Albert Hall of the survivors of " the First Seven Divisions," who suffered so terribly in the Great War. I saw standing by me an entire stranger, who looked like an educated gentleman. I spoke to him one word : " Marathonomachoi ! " (i.e., the fighters of Marathon," the great heroes of Creek history). " Yes," he replied, " yes ! and I was at Marathon the day the tomb was opened !"

I would have liked a further talk, but something prevented it.

Can you, or your readers, tell me when the tomb was opened, and what was found ?—Yours very truly,
