EQUITY AND LAW LIFE ASSURANCE.

The chairman of the Equity and Law Life Assurance Society, Sir Dennis Herbert, M.P., takes an optimistic view of the probable trend of security values. His speech on Tuesday was a justification of the society's policy of keepirg a substantial part of its investment portfolio in ordinary stocks. He pointed out that the market value of the invest- ments was of relatively little importance for the short view in a society which is seldom obliged to realise invested funds, that the income from these investments continued to increase and that the Society's, investment reserve remains intact. A. similar argument has been advanced by several insurance chairmen. But Sir Dennis went further, suggesting that the present market values would be found to be abnormally low and showing that he hoped for a considerable increase in the value of the Society's holdings in the not very distant
