Some modern composers start straight away with symphonies on operas,

but the " Op. 1" of Master T. X. Tanner is of more modest pretensions, consisting of a simple but pleasing setting of some plaintive lines, entitled The Spinster. Master Tanner's composition shows an intelligent appreciation of the words, while the melody is shapely and nicely harmonised. Altogether, the song, which is published by the composer at 17 Ryder Terrace, Twickenham, is a decidedly promising maiden effort.
