I MUST declare an interest, because Antony Lambton is my friend and Tuscan neighbour, but his book on Lord. Mount- batten (Constable, £12.95) gave me enor- mous pleasure. It was about time some- body called the great egomaniac's bluff, and Lord Lambton does it with style.

The best written book is Wartime (OUP, £15) by the American Paul Fussell, a writer of great substance. His work is erudite and reads easily, and tells us things about the second world war's fighting men that no one else has. (Fussell fought in the war). I find it required reading to understand what war and how men react to it is all about.

I also enjoyed Goring, by David Irving (Macmillan, £16.95), the best researched and most gripping work about one of the most colourful villians of the 20th century.

The most overrated? Easy. Why Budgie The Little Helicopter, of course, by one Fergie (Simon & Schuster, £4.95). Not since Eva Braun's opus about a baby stormtrooper have I heard (not read) such rubbish. My little boy was given the book and immediately threw it overboard.
