SPECTATOR COMPETITION No. 189

Set by Horace Wyndham Although factually correct and apparently flattering, obituary notices of public characters, if read between the lines, are apt to give a different impression of their subjects. Specimens of such notices (limited to 200 words) are invited and should deal with the career of one of the following : Wackford Squeers (educationist), Charles Mudle (" Select Library "), Horatio Bottomley (financier), Dr. Crippen (toxicologist), Sherlock Holmes (criminologist), Mrs. Bloomer (dress reformer), Mrs. Ormiston Chant (abolitionist). The usual prizes will be awarded.

Entries must be addressed to the Spectator, 99 Gower Street, London, W.C.1, in envelopes marked " Competition," and must be received not later than October 6th. Results will be published in the Spectator of October 16th.
