The aspect of the colliers' strike becomes serious. It is computed that in the Western coal-fields there are no fewer than 30,000 men idle, while iron-furnaces are " blown out " by the manufacturers. The men have hitherto behaved peaceably ; but large masses of men, -varying from 2000 to 12,000, assemble daily—disturbances might quickly arise. The authorities are making preparations to meet- such a contingency, by assembling the Militia in Airdrie and calling out the Yeomanry at Glasgow.
