The likelihood of Wran gel Island ever becoming officially recognized

as a portion of the British Empire has become more remote as a result of the statement of Mr. Stewart, the Minister of the Interior in the Canadian Government, who said that Canada made no claim to sovereignty over Wrangel Island. Mr. Stefansson, the Arctic explorer, when he was over here last year, was anxious that Great Britain should substantiate her claim, but in view of the Canadian Government's attitude it is hardly likely that the British Government will move in the matter. Claims for the island have also been made by the United States Government and Soviet Russia.
