It is affirmed that the United States frigate Colorado; of

40 guns, has been sent by President Johnson to convey Mr. Bright on a visit to America. He has defended the cause of the Union, and is to be treated as the Union's guest. We cannot guarantee the statement, which is, however, not improbable, but it is difficult to avoid speculating on the attitude 4r. Bright would under the circumstances assume. He would wish to be all courtesy, but the nature of the man has an affinity for truth, and he would not, we verily believe, be able to refrain from lecturing his hosts on their economic mistakes. Long before he reached Washington he would have doubled the power of the free-traders, and have lashed the Protectionist papers, —i. e., half the Republican journals of the country,—into an agony of spite. You may doubt whether the Constitution was revealed from Heaven and still escape anathema, but to question the sanctity of a tariff of forty-five per cent. ad valorem would be an unforgiveable sin. As well doubt in the hearing of the Record that Jonah literally lived in a whale.
