THE POPULATION OF PRETORIA. [To THE EDITOR OF THE "SPECTATORt.']

SIR,—In an interesting article on "The Military Situation and the Transvaal," in the Spectator of August 19th, it is stated that there are some thirty thousand Outlanders in Pretoria. May I be permitted to say that the whole popula- tion of Pretoria is about twelve thousand souls,—the greater proportion. being Boers (whites) and natives (blacks). The Outlander population in Pretoria is about three thousand, not thirty thousand.—I am, Sir, &c., J. WOODWARD HILL, Assoc.M. Inst.C.E.
