Juliette's Weekly Frolic

Wednesday, July 26 marked the turning point in the fortunes of the 1972 classic generation. On that sultry afternoon at Goodwood first Stilvi and Deep Diver, then Sallust and High Top fought the closest of duels and smashed the course records, with their elders following at a respectable distance. While Deep Diver convincingly reversed the placings with his ' conqueress ' in the ' Nunthorpe ' High Top will not be on hand to dish out similar treatment to Sallust in Saturday's Wills Mile — again at the Sussex course. Having won the Richmond Stakes as a two-year-old, the latter is something of a Goodwood specialist and if he can dispense with not only his older rivals Gold Rod, Sparkler and Comedy Star, but also his contemporary, Martinmas — an unlucky loser of the Hungerford Stakes — he should silence for good any remaining critics of his generation.

Being Bank Holiday the sponsors are out in force and Berni Inns, Sunshine Coaches and Pontins will be found colouring the scene at Bath's Variety Club meeting on Saturday. The Pontinental Holiday Nursery is one of three Saturday races for which Sam the Ram has been declared — others being at Goodwood and Windsor. The colt has had a nice, long rest since winning a Wolverhampton seller early in June, and though he has the weights in his favour at Bath, should make his presence felt wherever he runs.

Plagued by dodgy legs, Summer Cloud began the season in selling company, but after a hat-trick of wins, a third in Doncaster's ladies race and an all the way victory in a nonseller, he ran this year's handicap king, Negus, to half 9 length at York. With such credentials Newcastle's Blackgate Handicap should be easy money.

Assets £90.33, Outlay £3 to win Sallust, Sam the Ram & Summer Cloud.
