Upstairs downstairs

Sir: I enjoyed Malcolm Gladwell's article about Bermuda ('Where the British sun never sets', 12 August). I would only men- tion one small point. I do not think I am despised in Bermuda. I am certainly not despised because I have the temerity to fire my butler, 'a long-standing servant of Bermudian governors'.

I decided we should have a Bermudian butler at Government House, and there- fore did not renew the contract of the English butler I had inherited from my pre- decessor. The Bermudian butler did not prove satisfactory and I did not confirm his appointment at the end of his probationary period. I now have a highly satisfactory Bermudian butler in his place. Mr Gladwell should check his facts. They are well known here.
