If anyone can disentangle .the situation in China we envy

him. The chief facts in the confusion seem to be that the conflict between Chang Tso-lin and Ku Sung-lin is not yet settled. But the star of Chang seems to be waning, partly, it is said, through treachery. Meanwhile Feng, the Christian General, still holds Peking where the authority of the Government is at a low ebb. Feng is supposed to be helping Ku against Chang. If all these leaders cannot compose their difficulties and sit down together to confer with the Powers much the best thing would be that one of them should come out of the struggle unquestionably paramount. The chief need for the Powers is to be able to deal with somebody whose writ will run. * * * * •
