A " sensational " case of a particularly revolting kind

was tried by Mr. Justice Avory at Lewes Assizes last week. We approved of the Bill introduced by Sir Evelyn Cecil to regulate the Press reports of indecent evidence after two especially scandalizing trials taken in London this year. Mr. Justice Avory, however, showed the immense power that lies with the presiding Judge to maintain the dignity of the Court by keeping counsel and witnesses to the legal points and refusing to allow any squalid extra- vagances or sensation-mongering to which the way would certainly have been otherwise open in this case. The reports were disgusting enough because the evidence was disgusting, but thanks to the Judge it was not worked up in Court in such a way as to invite the Press to wallow in it.
