of news from India, China, and the Levant-

" Marseilles, 23d February 1842.

" The Gorgon packet arrived last night from Alexandria with an Indian mail, landed at Suez by a merchant-steamer, which lett Calcutta (queue, Bom- bay ?) on the 9th January.

" She brings the confirmation of the taking by our troops of Mangkowfow; but no other news from China.

" The intelligence from Afghanistan comes down to the 15th December. The position of General Sale amidst the insurrection was still extremely cri- tical. Colonel M'Larne, who was sent to relieve him, had failed. A fresh attack of the insurgents against our troops in Afghanistan had failed.

"Our private letters from Jerusalem, dated the 27th ultimo, announce the arrival and public entry of the Bishop of Palestine into the city of David,' under circumstances the most auspicious."
